LaTeX is a typesetting system designed for technical an scientific documentation. It is free software and has the major advantages of being highly transportable (different platforms and/or LaTeX compilers/interpreters) and to produce highly transportable documents, namely Postscript (PS) and Portable Document Format (PDF).

Of course there is a little downdraft. You have to learn a few commands and forget about klick and search to use it effectively. However, it should take less time to learn the basics of LaTeX than to earn the cash to buy let's say MS Word. A main idea of LaTeX is to let authors concentrate on the content of their documents. If you prefer fancy layouts to the content of documents then you are very likely on the wrong webpage.
